After Keratin Treatment: Helpful Tips, Dos & Don’ts

If you’ve ever gotten a Keratin treatment, you know that it’s a long and grueling process and doesn’t come cheap. To reap the full benefits of the treatment and prolong it as much as possible, we’re going to share some tips and things to avoid. But before we get into that, let us explain what Keratin is.

What is a Keratin Treatment?

If you have thick, curly, or frizzy hair, you’ve more than likely been advised to get a keratin treatment. Also known as a Brazilian Blowout, the treatment really helps transform your hair from curly to sleek and shiny, giving you that flatiron look. Keratin is a solution that releases formaldehyde once in contact with your hair. Hairstylists will let the chemical sit in your hair for about half an hour before blow-drying, then thoroughly straightening it. When done correctly, depending on your hair type, the treatment will last from 3 to 6 months.

Read on for more tips on how to make the most of it.

Dos

Use Prescribed Shampoo

Many hairstylists will recommend a specific type of shampoo or conditioner post-keratin treatment. Even if the shampoo you choose to use on your own is sulfate-free, it could still include an ingredient that is damaging your hair and ruining the treatment. Consult your stylist for the best option.

Apply Conditioner

Apply conditioner on dry hair just before you take a shower. Just as your hair is stripped of its natural oils when in contact with too much water, keratin is also released with every shower. Applying conditioner before jumping in the shower will keep it moisturized, and allow the treatment to last longer.

Install a Shower Filter

To further ensure your hair doesn’t get stripped of its natural oils by chlorine and other harmful minerals lurking in your shower water, consider installing a shower filter. Pure Blue’s shower filter eliminates 98% of the chlorine and minerals in your shower water, keeping your scalp moisturized and all your hair treatments lasting longer.

Don’ts

Don’t Tie or Twist your Hair

In order for the keratin to work effectively, you must not tie up, braid, or twist your hair for at least 48 hours. Doing so might lead to waves or curls once you wash the product out of your hair. Additionally, it’s important to not get your hair wet during that period as it might reverse the process, leaving you with partially wavy hair.

Don’t Undergo Other Hair Treatments

For at least a month after your keratin treatment, try to avoid any other chemical-based treatments, including dying your hair. Many other hair treatments might open your hair cuticles, releasing the keratin prematurely.

Don’t Over Wash Your Hair

Washing your hair frequently will strip it of the keratin treatment faster. Within the first few weeks of a keratin treatment, you may notice your scalp getting slightly more oily than usual. Try to wash your hair no more than 2-3 times a week, but if it gets to be a problem, consult your hairstylist.

Thinking of getting a keratin hair treatment? Just make sure to follow the tips we shared in order to enjoy your silky smooth hair for longer.
